Deion Sanders Reveals Bladder Cancer Battle, Says He’s Now Cancer-Free Ahead of Colorado Football Season

Boulder, Colo. — July 28, 2025

University of Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders publicly revealed on Monday that he recently battled and beat bladder cancer, announcing that he underwent surgery to remove his bladder and is now cancer-free. The revelation came during a press conference held on campus in Boulder, where Sanders appeared alongside his urologic oncologist, Dr. Janet Kukreja of the University of Colorado Hospital, and Colorado athletic trainer Lauren Askevold.

“It’s been a tremendous journey,” Sanders said solemnly. “It’s been tough. But I’m still here, and I’m grateful.”

The 56-year-old Hall of Famer and former NFL star had been absent from the team’s spring and early summer activities while recovering at his estate in east Texas. That absence, now explained, was due to an aggressive treatment and recovery process following his cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

Sanders, who is entering his third season leading the Buffaloes, disclosed that the cancer was discovered earlier this spring, and after consultation with his medical team, a decision was made to remove his bladder entirely. Dr. Kukreja confirmed that the cancer had not spread beyond the bladder and that Sanders is currently considered cancer-free.

“He responded very well to treatment and surgery, and his prognosis moving forward is excellent,” Dr. Kukreja said. “Coach Sanders’ strength and determination were evident every step of the way.”

Sanders shared personal details about the physical and emotional toll the disease took. He revealed he lost 25 pounds during the process and added, with a mix of gravity and humor, “I can’t pee like I used to pee.”

Despite the health battle, Sanders is returning to the sidelines with renewed energy and purpose. “I’m not the same man, but I’m a better man,” he said. “It puts things in perspective. I don’t take this opportunity to coach and lead these young men for granted.”

Colorado athletic trainer Lauren Askevold, who has been with Sanders throughout his medical journey, praised his resilience and discipline during recovery. “He’s the kind of person who attacks adversity like it’s the fourth quarter and the game is on the line. He never backed down.”

Sanders’ return comes at a crucial time for the Buffaloes, who are preparing for a pivotal 2025 season under the bright lights of college football’s national spotlight. After a rocky but promising first two seasons that drew massive attention to the program, expectations remain high.

Athletic Director Rick George released a statement shortly after the press conference, saying, “We are beyond thankful that Coach Prime is healthy and back with us. His strength continues to inspire everyone around him — our athletes, our staff, and our fans.”

Sanders ended the news conference by thanking his medical team, family, and the Colorado community for their support, adding, “God’s not done with me yet. I’m still standing, and we’ve got work to do this season.”
