TRAVERSE CITY, MI — A horrifying act of violence unfolded Friday evening at a Walmart in Traverse City, where a man armed with a folding knife stabbed 11 people near a checkout area before being subdued by bystanders, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred around 5:00 p.m. local time on July 26, sending shockwaves through the busy retail store and prompting an immediate law enforcement and emergency response.
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea addressed reporters in a press conference, confirming that a 42-year-old Michigan resident was taken into custody at the scene. Authorities say the suspect used a standard folding knife in what appeared to be a series of random, unprovoked attacks.
“Based on the information that we have at this time, they were random acts,” Sheriff Shea stated. “There is currently no indication that the victims were targeted or known to the suspect.”
Witnesses described chaos erupting near the front of the store, with customers running for safety and store employees quickly calling 911. Some bystanders took action to confront and restrain the attacker before law enforcement arrived.
Emergency medical personnel treated victims at the scene and transported several to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. As of late Friday night, the condition of the victims ranged from minor to serious injuries. No fatalities have been reported at this time.
The suspect is currently in custody at the Grand Traverse County Jail. Authorities have not yet released his name, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. Sheriff Shea said that both the Michigan State Police and the FBI are assisting in gathering evidence and reviewing surveillance footage.
“We want to commend the brave citizens who intervened to stop the suspect,” Shea said. “Their actions likely prevented further injury and loss of life.”
The Walmart store has been temporarily closed as investigators process the scene. Law enforcement officials are asking anyone who may have witnessed the attack or has video footage to contact the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.
Residents and community leaders have expressed shock and concern following the attack. Traverse City Mayor Richard Lewis released a brief statement late Friday, saying, “Our hearts are with the victims and their families tonight. We are grateful to first responders and citizens who acted swiftly and bravely.”
As investigators work to determine a motive, mental health and public safety experts are also being consulted. Authorities expect to release more information in the coming days as the case develops.
